NOT JUST AN EYE EXAM

An eye exam is an important part of learning! The eyes play the biggest factor when gathering information, especially when reading. If the eyes aren’t at the top of their game, a child will have to work even harder to get the results you desire.

I found this article about comprehensive eye exams.

Along with the normal exam routine, a comprehensive eye exam does an assessment of eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye movement abilities (accommodation, binocular vision, ocular motility). These are vital components of how your eyes function.

Accommodation is the ability to focus the eyes. Not only is it imperative to be able to focus quickly and easily, we need to be able to focus near and far without even thinking about it. As a student, how many times a day do they look from their papers to the teacher or board? As an adult, how many times do we look at something close, like the steering wheel, then far, to the road and cars beyond our car? If we are struggling with this action then it delays our processing speed. Delays of processing speed can cause accidents on the road, and delays in learning abilities.

Binocular vision is the ability to use both eyes as a team. If the eyes aren’t working as a team, it can cause headaches, sluggishness, undue eye strain, restlessness, inattentiveness, learning delays and more.

Ocular motility is the ability to move the eyes and be aware of things around us. This sounds like a something that should be a given with any set of eyes, but when someone struggles with it, it can cause a whole host of problems, some of which was mentioned above.

Please, as you take your children and yourselves to get your eyes examined, ask for a comprehensive eye exam! Take the extra time to make sure the eyes are functioning properly.

If the doctor finds a problem he can refer you to an optometrist who is a member of the COVD, with an expanded functional, developmental and behavioral approach to vision evaluations. http://locate.covd.org/ Their approach to vision care is directed at correcting existing vision problems and enhancing visual abilities to allow individuals to see clearly and comfortably.

Be the advocate your student needs you to be! If your student is having vision problems, they often don’t know they aren’t seeing correctly. They think everyone sees like they do.
